Morphological description It is one of the largest macroalgae in the world. It consists of a holdfast (or rhizoid) that anchors it to the rocky substrate, long, flexible stipes (stalks), and leafy blades featuring pneumatocysts (gas-filled bladders that provide buoyancy, allowing it to remain upright toward the surface). Its color ranges from pale yellow to dark brown. 3. Habitat and distribution It inhabits cold, temperate, nutrient-rich waters, forming dense underwater ecosystems known as kelp forests. It is widely distributed across the Southern Hemisphere—including the coasts of Peru,—as well as the North Pacific. It can be found from the intertidal zone down to depths of approximately 30 m, depending on local conditions. 4. Ecology It is a keystone species: it provides habitat, breeding grounds, shelter, and food for a wide diversity of fish and marine invertebrates. Additionally, it contributes to carbon sequestration and the attenuation of wave energy, supporting the structure and productivity of coastal ecosystems. 5.
